The Big Day
Summer was over; it was dark and wet, very wet. Yet, on walking into the village hall on 31st August for the Rainford Village Show, it was like midsummer’s day. Stunning flowers everywhere, colourful globes of dahlias, huge chrysanthemums, roses and pansies in a whole spectrum of colours, beautiful fuchsias, their flowers like fairy lights. Tables were full of home grown fruit and vegetables, parsnips like walking sticks, metre long carrots and onions as big as footballs, huge apples and tiny tomatoes all laid out in formation. Rainford in Bloom had a stand showing photos of our beautiful village, as colourful as the exhibits on show.
Crafters and bakers had also been hard at it. The smell of freshly baked bread and cakes drifted towards you whilst you perused the knitted matinee coats, patchwork handbags, handmade cards, decorated boxes. The children had made jewellery and button pictures, some had also been baking and decorating cakes which could easily have graced Channel 4's Bake Off TV Programme.
The florists were not to be outdone. One of their challenges was to create eye catching displays to match the theme of the seaside and they let their imagination go wild, using props such as deckchairs and sea shells incorporated in to the their beautiful flower displays, some of which were over a metre tall and which took hours to create.
In a separate room was the photography exhibition, 238 photographs by photographers from all around the village and surrounding areas, all competing to win the Best In Show and People's Choice Awards. A visitor to the show described it as the best photography exhibition in the North West and the professional judge was “honoured” to be invited.
I would like to thank everyone who entered, helped out or judged the exhibits and to the hundreds of visitors who came along for making it a fantastic day
If you have never been to our Show before, you should really come and see for yourself how good it is and if you have ever baked a cake, taken a photograph or grown your own flowers/vegetables, why not enter the Show itself and you never know, you may win one of the many trophies on offer.
